WooCommerce 2.6 was recently released and includes many changes, improvements and fixes. Most notably, WooCommerce now includes “native” support for Shipping Classes — a long requested and very welcome feature.
Other changes include some UI improvements, with AJAX refreshes for the Cart pages and a nice tabbed interface for the My Account pages. You can read more about the changes on the WooCommerce Dev blog.
Thinking of updating to WooCommerce 2.6?
While this is an exciting update for WooCommerce users, there are a few important things to be aware of before you upgrade. This is a major update and should ideally be performed by a web designer or developer who can ensure that everything goes smoothly and recoverable backups are taken before any changes are made.
There are distinct possibilities for breaking changes to affect your site if you don’t ensure that your WooCommerce theme and extensions are also 2.6 compatible, particularly if you use a custom shipping extension. Users of WooThemes Table Rate Shipping and Flat Rate Box need to ensure they update those plugins, so that they support the new Shipping Classes feature.
As ever with a major WooCommerce update, we recommend:
- Backup WP database
- Backup WP /wp-content directory
- Get latest version of your WooCommerce theme.
- Check it for WooCommerce 2.6.x compatibility
- Check all WooCommerce related plugins / extensions for WooCommerce 2.6 compatibility
- Get and install any updates
- Backup WP database (again)
- Update WooCommerce to 2.6.x
- Test your site.
