Frequently Asked Questions

If you can't find your question, please ask it.

General

  • Where are WP NET’s servers located?

All WP NET’s customer web servers are located in Auckland, New Zealand.

We use Amazon AWS S3 storage in Australia for off-server backups. All backup data is sent over TLS (SSL) and stored using AES256 encryption.

If you have any questions, please contact us.

  • Does WP NET host email?

No — we do not provide email hosting services. We recommend that you host your email with a specialist mail hosting provider, our recommendations are as follows:

The above prices are all USD and subject to change.

If you register or transfer your domain to WP NET, we can provide email forwarders for email addresses under those domains. For example, if you registered website.nz with us, you could add an email forwarder to catch all mail addressed to hello@website.nz and forward it to youraccount@gmail.com. You can set up as many email fowarders as you need.

  • Can WP NET move my WordPress site?

Yes — each Managed WordPress Hosting account includes free migration from your current host.

Once you have signed up and your hosting service has been provisioned, you can request a website migration.

If you have any questions about webasite migration, please contact us.

  • I need some development work done — can WP NET help?

While we do provide some WordPress development services to our customers, our focus is on hosting and technical support, so we don’t take on large-scale development projects.

For suggestions on where to find a freelance WordPress designer or developer, please see Find a WordPress Developer.

  • My site has been hacked! Can WP NET fix it?

Yes — we offer hack repair / site clean services to existing customers and new customers who wish to migrate to WP NET. Our WordPress experts clean your site in an isolated test environment. Then, once verified, tested and optimised, we deploy your site to our servers.

We conduct a full review and make other optimisations and suggestions as appropriate.

Development fees do apply for hack repair work, please enquire for an estimate for your site.

  • How can I pay for WP NET’s services?

We accept payments via Credit Card, PayPal and bank direct deposit.

Credit card payments are processed by Stripe, a secure, PCI-compliant payment gateway. WP NET does not store your complete credit card details — all details are encrypted and securely transmitted to Stripe for processing. If you opt to save your credit card for future billing, your card details will be stored by Stripe. You can remove or update your card details at any time from our customer portal website, My WP NET.

If you pay via PayPal, you can choose to pay from your PayPal balance, or from your credit card. We support single payments and recurring payments. Recurring payments require that you have an active PayPal account.

If you would like to pay by bank direct deposit, please look for our account details at the bottom of your WP NET invoice.

  • How is WP NET different from other web hosts?

WP NET is very different to other NZ-based web hosts — we are a dedicated WordPress web host — run by developers with years of experience building, maintaining and supporting WordPress websites. Furthermore, we exclusively provide “managed” hosting services which goes far beyond your standard web hosting in terms of features, support and performance.

Our hosting technology is built upon a state-of-the-art cloud server platform and our servers are optimised to run WordPress and nothing else. We implement numerous security and performance enhancements to all our Managed WordPress sites so that your site runs fast and is as secure as possible.

We also monitor, maintain and update your WordPress website for you, and when you contact us, you’re dealing directly with an experienced WordPress user who knows what they are talking about.

When you consider the differences between WP NET and other NZ web hosts, we believe that we represent excellent value for money.

Please see the Service Specification for more details.

  • My site gets a lot of traffic — can WP NET handle it?

Our Managed WordPress Hosting is an advanced “shared hosting” platform, especially designed to run WordPress websites. Our platform scales very well and is built on the latest cloud hosting technology. We run a low number of sites per server and we over-spec CPU and RAM resources.

While this platform is suitable for most WordPress websites, very high traffic sites may be better suited to a Managed Cloud Server — which provides your website with dedicated resources.

One common scenario is high-traffic WooCommerce sites — a large, busy WooCommerce store can be very demanding in terms of server resources, and so a Managed Cloud Server is often a good choice to ensure you get consistent performance.

If you’re not sure about what kind of hosting service you need, just get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss your hosting requirements.

  • Why Choose WP NET for WordPress hosting?

WP NET’s years of experience with WordPress and hosting technology uniquely positions us to provide cost-effective hosting services and support.

WP NET is your hosting provider and remote web admin team — saving you time and simplifying your website management processes.

Our research shows that most of our customers choose us for one (or all!) of three reasons:

    1. the expertise and support we provide for WordPress
    2. reliable, high-quality, NZ-based hosting services
    3. NZ location — no time-zone or language barriers

Managed Cloud Servers

  • What is the difference between Managed WordPress Hosting and Managed Cloud Server?

WP NET offers two different types of hosting services, specifically tailored to WordPress users:

    1. Managed WordPress hosting — High-performance shared-server hosting
      1. Secure, fast, cost-effective Managed WordPress hosting
      2. Suits small-to-medium sized sites
    2. Managed Cloud Server — Dedicated, single-tenant cloud server
      1. Very fast(!), secure, scalable, reliable – the premium platform for your WordPress or WooCommerce website
      2. Complete isolation from all other WP NET customers
      3. Run 1 or 2 busy sites … or host dozens of sites on a single server
      4. Suits large, demanding sites, such as WooCommerce

If your site is a pretty standard WordPress site, or a small-scale WooCommerce store, our Managed WordPress Hosting should suit just fine. However, if your site is a larger, busy WooCommerce store, WPMU or just a very high-traffic site, you should seriously consider Managed Cloud Hosting for the maximum benefits in terms of hosting technology, performance, security and scalability.

  • Do I get root access to the Cloud Server?

No — as a fully managed service, root access is not provided to the customer.

Managed Cloud Server customers use our custom control panel to create system users, databases and configure websites. You get the benefits of a dedicated Cloud Server environment, without the complexity. SFTP access is also provided.

Managed WordPress Hosting: No, WP-CLI is not currently available on our shared-server Managed WordPress Hosting platform. You can always add more disk space to your account by purchasing a disk space upgrade add-on.

Managed Cloud Servers: Managed Cloud Servers do not currently support automated staging site creation, but this is a feature we hope to add in the future. You can copy any site on your Managed Cloud Server using your preferred tools, or you can use WP-CLI.

You can purchase GeoTrust SSL certificates to secure your WordPress website directly from WP NET at competitive prices.

  • Can I host my BuddyPress site with WP NET?

Managed WordPress Hosting: Yes — however, we do not support WPMU (WordPress Multi-site), so you cannot use the user blog feature of BuddyPress. Also, BuddyPress can be very resource intensive and the official documentation recommends at least a VPS server. See the Buddy Press documentation for details.

Managed Cloud Server: Yes — you can run BuddyPress with WPMU on a Managed Cloud Server.

Support & Development

  • Can I build my site on WP NET?

Yes — once you have signed up with WP NET you can install a fresh copy of WordPress, add a theme  — and then go from there.

However, what we recommend that you do is build your WordPress site locally, on your own computer, and then deploy it to our live servers, when you’re ready to go “live”.

Building locally means that it will be much faster for you, because you’ll be working directly on the server. Secondly, if you edit files, you only have to save in your editor and your changes take effect — no messing around with FTP.

There are many tools available to help you run a WordPress server on your local machine. For the simplest solution, we suggest you check out Instant WP, Desktop Server or Local by FlyWheel. Our preferred local development environment is Varying Vagrant Vagrants.

Managed Cloud Servers: Yes — you can use automated FreeSSL from Let’s Encrypt, or you can purchase a certificate from another certificate authority, including WP NET.

FreeSSL is the name we use to describe the free SSL certificates available to customers on our MWP2.0 servers. FreeSSL is available on Starter + SSL, Professional and Business plans. Installation of FreeSSL certificate take only a couple of clicks and once installed and activated they renew automatically.

If you have any questions, please contact us.

FreeSSL certificates are provided by Let’s Encrypt.

  • Can I password protect directories under my hosting account?

Yes — On Managed WordPress Hosting, the Plesk Panel provides functionality to password protect your website. This includes sub-domains — so if you use a staging site you can stop access by web crawlers and other unwanted visitors.

Managed Cloud Servers can password protect sites by using .htpasswd and .htaccess rules. This must be set up via the command line. Instructions are available in our Knowledgebase.

  • Will Apache rewrites work on my WP NET website?

Yes — in most cases we run Apache as our primary web server (with NGINX as a reverse proxy) so you can use .htaccess for Apache rewrites and other configurations. MWP2.0 accounts do include an experimental feature to run your site on Nginx-only and bypass Apache altogether. In this configuration, .htaccess will have no effect.

  • Can I get a dedicated IP address for my hosting account?

Managed WordPress Hosting: No — dedicated IP addresses are not supported.  Note that to use SSL on your website does not require a dedicated IP, as all modern web browsers support SSL via SNI. Read more about SNI.

Managed Cloud Server: Each Managed Cloud Server includes 1x dedicated IP address, which is shared between all sites on your server. Additional IP addresses may be available. Fees will apply. Please open a support ticket and we will assist.

  • Can I add more disk space to my WP NET hosting account?

Yes — you can add more disk space to any hosting plan for NZD$2.00 per month per GB, plus GST (up to 5GB per subscription).

  • What is an SSL EV Certificate?

SSL EV is SSL Extended Validation — these are generally considered the most trusted option for SSL certificates. They are the only certificates that trigger the “green bar” in modern web browsers.

    EV SSL Certificate

Please note that the requirements to qualify for an EV certificate are much more strict than those required for DV (Domain Validation).

Purchase a GeoTrust Extended Validtion SSL Certificate from WP NET. Other certificate types also available.

  • How do I activate my website on WP NET?

Once your WP NET hosting account is active you will receive an email with instructions on how to do this. This email will include an IP address for the WP NET server where your hosting account is located. You will need to edit your domain’s zone file ‘A’ record to point to this IP address.

Full instructions are available in the WP NET Knowledge Base. If you need any help with setting up or configuring your domain, just open a support ticket and we will be happy to help.

  • Do I need SSL support for my hosting plan?

Generally speaking, SSL support is only necessary if you are capturing confidential information on your website — most commonly this would be taking credit card details to process payments. However, in some cases you may want to use SSL if you have a form that collects personal details or other sensitive information.

Note that even if you’re running WooCommerce and taking payment for orders, you still don’t necessarily need SSL support. In most cases the payment details are entered on a third-party remote payment page, such as PayPal or Payment Express. You only require SSL support if your payment processor extension captures the credit card details directly on your website.

However, in the last few years there has been a general trend to use SSL regardless of whether you are capturing sensitive information. Search engines now use SSL as a page ranking factor and there are now also performance benefits in using SSL.

WP NET customers can use FreeSSL to automatically issue and renew SSL certificates thanks to Let’s Encrypt.

If you have any questions regarding SSL support, please contact us.

For domains registered with us — yes — we provide free DNS Zone management via our secure domain management portal.

We are happy to assist new and existing hosting customers with domain and DNS configuration — just open a support ticket.

If your domain is registered elsewhere, you will need to provide us with access to your domain registrar’s control panel, or we can just let you know what you need to do. Your registrar’s support team should also be able to help.
